The idea of spending some of the time reading "exceptional and enduring books" is key. But other than the true core books, read freely. When you get the feeling of wasting time, find another core work from the great Western canon. Or revisit one you've read and get to know it better. But don't commit yourself to a big list. I think that will kill off half the fun. For me at least, I think I would end up having read less by the end of my life if I followed a written plan. (Fine-tuning the core list wouldn't be a bad idea, however!)

I just discovered your website through the Wendell Berry discussion list.

I sympathize with you here. I'm an obsessive reader and I've only recently decided that my only hope is to read the "exceptional and enduring" books. I have gotten overwhelmed before by all the books that interest me. I'm attempting to be a less profligate reader.

And you have a great recommended reading list.
