Chernobyl Legacy

A powerful and moving photo documentary about the effects of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Horrible. Lord have mercy. When a nuclear power plant is proposed in your neighborhood, remember this.

There is a book, “Voices from Chernobyl: Chronicle of the Future”, by an Ukrainian writer of rare narrative talent, Svetlana Alexievitch - unfortunately I was not able to find this book on Amazon.com, French translation is available here : http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/2290343609/qid=1146158426/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_0/171-0852641-8585065 An immensely powerful documentary text, based on interviews of the survivors, “liquidators” - people who were sent to fight the fire, unprotected, and then thrown out at hospital beds to die, far away from “democratic press”. The book is unique, because most of them are now dead, and in ten years it will be over for those who remain. If I were asked to choose only one contemporary book to recommend to those who wish to understand Soviet Russia, I would choose this one.

    Marianna,

Thanks for your thoughts. This looks like a book I should read. Here is the link to the English translation on Amazon. Thanks for the book recommendation!
