Steve Jobs and DRM

If Steve Jobs wants DRM-free music (and we all do, I hope), why doesn’t the iTunes Store let musicians offer their music without DRM? That seems like a good first step.

Well, probably because his essay had some laterior motives.

As some have pointed out, one of his basic premises — that the “secrets” of DRM must be compromised — isn’t necessarily true. I’ve been updating my Mac for 5 years using Software Update, and have no idea how it’s done, or what the secret is.

The same system could be used with 3rd party DRM licensees.
