Racism and religious language (Wallis)

August 26th, 2007  |  Published in Politics, Quotes, Race, Religion

Why do so many liberals seem supportive of religious language when it is invoked by black civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr., but recoil when such language is employed by white political leaders? Is there a subtle kind of racism going on here, where religion is okay for liberals as long as it comes from black or poor people? Are black people supposed to be culturally religious (love those black choirs), while white believers are intellectually suspect?

Leaving the stage (Steinbeck)

August 25th, 2007  |  Published in Life, Quotes

I see too many men delay their exits with a sickly, slow reluctance to leave the stage. It’s bad theater as well as bad living.

Major Major’s mediocrity (Heller)

August 24th, 2007  |  Published in Humor and Satire, Life, Quotes

Major Major had been born too late and too mediocre. Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them. With Major Major it had been all three. Even among men lacking all distinction he inevitably stood out as a man lacking more distinction than all the rest, and people who met him were always impressed by how unimpressive he was.

[Meta] Comments not working

August 23rd, 2007  |  Published in Personal

The comments are not working. I’m not sure why and there does not appear to be an easy fix. I need to upgrade the blog software anyway, so I’ll be working on getting things fixed up as soon as I can. Upgrading is a hassle. This time, though, I’ll start from scratch with a subversion checkout of WordPress, so upgrading in the future should be easier even with modifications.

I also might do a quick redesign based on the new Blueprint CSS Framework. Stay tuned.

Protest is not enough (Wallis)

August 23rd, 2007  |  Published in Life, Politics, Quotes

Saying no is good, but having an alternative is better. Protest is not enough; it is necessary to show a better way.

Science and death (Berry)

August 22nd, 2007  |  Published in Life, Quotes, Science

Science can teach us and help us to resist death, but it can’t teach us to prepare for death or to die well.

Superficial readers (Steinbeck)

August 21st, 2007  |  Published in Consumerism, Culture, Education, Quotes

I have found many readers more interested in what I wear than what I think, more avid to know how I do it than in what I do.

Enjoying literature (Heller)

[Clevinger] knew everything about literature except how to enjoy it.
