Here are a few articles that have caught my attention this week and I think are worth your attention.

Another possible source of guidance for teenagers is television, but television’s message has always been that the need for truth, wisdom and world peace pales by comparison with the need for a toothpaste that offers whiter teeth and fresher breath.

I’ve redesigned the site. (All those reading through RSS will actually have to visit the site to see it.) It’s a little cleaner, a little plainer, and boasts some new colors. Above all, I think this reflects my bias towards the medium of text a little better. My previous design was done before I had read Neil Postman. So for better or for worse, here it is. Enjoy!

If you want to become an early riser, but find you are “not wired that way” (which is a self-delusional thought that I long entertained), you might find these articles helpful:
I got in the habit of staying up far past midnight but then sleeping in during college (as most college students do, I imagine). Over the past two months I’ve been getting up earlier and it has been extremely helpful in terms of productivity and health. I’ve also found that a shower and a walk will do wonders to wake you up. Perhaps Benjamin Franklin (or was it Aristotle…) was right after all by saying, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

Because God knows I need the help.
You’ve decided you want to improve your handwriting and you’re probably hoping a fountain pen will do the trick — maybe a friend told you it would. Maybe you’re just adventurous and you want to try your hand at calligraphy (or you might, once your handwriting improves). Good for you!

Who says safe computing must remain a pipe dream?
A good article on security. Worth the read. My favorite quote (of course):
If possible, don’t use Microsoft Windows. Buy a Macintosh or use Linux. If you must use Windows, set up Automatic Update so that you automatically receive security patches. And delete the files “command.com” and “cmd.exe.”
However, the most useful information for the average person (other than buy a Mac) is:
Delete spam without reading it. Don’t open messages with file attachments, unless you know what they contain; immediately delete them. Don’t open cartoons, videos and similar “good for a laugh” files forwarded by your well-meaning friends; again, immediately delete them.
